Dry January and Our Sparkling Berry Bliss: A Pelvic-Healthy Mocktail

Cheers to Dry January

Discovering the Roots of Dry January

Back in 2013, the UK witnessed the birth of Dry January, a movement introduced by Alcohol Change UK. Its concept was simple yet impactful: urging individuals to refrain from alcohol for the entire first month of the year. This initiative aimed not only to promote temporary abstinence but also to ignite a long-lasting reevaluation of our connection with alcohol.
Unveiling the Health Perks of Cutting Back on Booze
As a healthcare professional, I cannot stress enough the numerous benefits that come with reducing alcohol intake. Alcohol impacts various bodily systems, with women often feeling its effects more significantly. Let's dive into some key health advantages that accompany scaling back on alcohol:
1. Improved Sleep Quality: Alcohol can disrupt natural sleep patterns, resulting in subpar slumber. By abstaining, you can restore your body's innate sleep rhythms, crucial for overall well-being.
2. Enhanced Mental Health: Alcohol consumption can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and depression. Taking a break from the bottle can positively influence your mental well-being, leading to a brighter outlook.
3. Weight Management: Alcoholic beverages often pack a caloric punch. By cutting them out, you can contribute to weight loss efforts or prevent unwanted weight gain, keeping you feeling light and energized.
4. Better Hydration and Skin Health: Alcohol acts as a diuretic, causing dehydration, which can take a toll on your skin's health and appearance. Reducing alcohol intake can help improve skin hydration, giving you that radiant glow.
5. Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases: Long-term alcohol use has been linked to an increased risk of various chronic conditions, including liver disease, heart disease, and certain cancers. By moderating your alcohol consumption, you can actively work towards reducing these risks.
6. Hormonal Harmony: Alcohol can disrupt hormonal balance, potentially impacting reproductive health. Practicing abstinence can assist in maintaining a harmonious hormonal equilibrium, supporting your overall well-being.

7. Pelvic Health:  Alcohol is a known bladder irritant that can worsen incontinence, pelvic pain, urgency and frequency.

8. Microbiome balance:  Alcohol can throw off the microbiome affecting inflammation, decreased immunity mood, hormone, sex drive, fertility and so much more
Whether you're participating in Dry January or simply contemplating your relationship with alcohol, remember that this journey is about taking a step towards a healthier, more empowered you. As we continue to normalize conversations around health and wellness, let's embrace the choices that bring us closer to our ultimate goal: a fulfilled, healthy life.

Sparkling Berry Bliss: A Pelvic-Healthy Mocktail

Indulge in the refreshing taste of the "Sparkling Berry Bliss," a fun and pelvic-healthy mocktail that’s low in sugar but high in flavor. This delightful drink combines antioxidant-rich berries, soothing herbal tea, and sparkling water, making it a perfect beverage for maintaining pelvic health and overall wellness.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup mixed fresh berries (like blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries)
  • 1 cup brewed herbal tea (chamomile or hibiscus are great choices for their relaxing properties)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice ( optional: avoid if you have a history of interstitial cystitis)
  • Sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)
  • Optional: a dash of stevia or honey for natural sweetness (if desired)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tea: Brew your choice of herbal tea and let it cool. Chamomile is known for its calming properties, while hibiscus adds a tart, cranberry-like flavor, both of which are excellent for pelvic health.

  2. Muddle the Berries: In a glass, gently muddle the mixed berries to release their juices. Berries are rich in antioxidants and vitamins, making them ideal for a health-focused mocktail.

  3. Add Lemon ( avoid if you have a history of interstitial cystitis)  and Sweetener: Mix in the lemon juice. If you prefer a slightly sweeter taste, add a dash of stevia or honey. Lemon juice adds a refreshing zest and aids in digestion.

  4. Combine with Tea: Pour the cooled herbal tea over the muddled berries. Herbal teas are beneficial for their anti-inflammatory properties, making them a great choice for a pelvic-healthy diet.

  5. Add Sparkle: Fill the rest of the glass with sparkling water, which gives a delightful fizz without adding sugar or unnecessary calories.

  6. Garnish and Serve: Add ice cubes to the glass and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. Mint not only adds a burst of freshness but also has soothing properties for the digestive system.

  7. Enjoy: Stir gently and enjoy your Sparkling Berry Bliss mocktail!

This mocktail is not only delicious but also supports pelvic health by incorporating ingredients that are anti-inflammatory, high in antioxidants, and low in sugar. It's a perfect drink to unwind with, while taking care of your body and taste buds!
